Some people can be sensitive to the adhesive used for eyelash extensions. The most common signs are redness, itching, burning, watery eyes or swollen eyelids. If that happens to you, don’t rub your eyes, see an ophthalmologist or dermatologist, and let your lash artist know.

This article is for general information and is not a substitute for medical advice. Only a doctor can tell what is going on and recommend treatment. Here we cover what to watch for and how to act safely.

What are the signs of lash glue sensitivity?

Symptoms vary from person to person. Pay attention if you notice:

  • Redness in the eyes or on the eyelids.
  • Itching that doesn’t go away or gets worse.
  • Swelling of the eyelids or around the eyes.
  • Burning or stinging.
  • Watery eyes or sensitivity to light.

These signs may show up right after the appointment or some time later. They can also have other causes, which is why a medical opinion matters.

Irritation from fumes or an allergy?

While the adhesive dries, it releases fumes. In some people, those fumes can cause mild stinging or watery eyes during or just after the appointment, which tends to ease fairly quickly. An allergic reaction, on the other hand, is usually stronger or lasts longer and may include swelling and persistent itching.

There is no reliable way to tell these apart on your own. When in doubt, treat any symptom as a reason to see a doctor.

What should you do if you react?

  1. Don’t rub your eyes. It can make irritation worse and damage your natural lashes.
  2. Don’t self-medicate with eye drops, creams or home remedies without medical guidance.
  3. See an ophthalmologist or dermatologist. They are the right professionals to assess you.
  4. Tell your lash artist what happened so you can agree on next steps together.
  5. Don’t remove the extensions at home. Pulling them or using oil to loosen the adhesive can irritate the area further and pull out natural lashes. If your doctor recommends removal, have it done by a professional.

Mention sensitivities before your appointment

The best protection is a conversation beforehand. When booking, tell your lash artist:

  • If you have ever reacted to lash extensions, adhesive, makeup or cosmetics.
  • If you have known allergies or sensitive eyes.
  • If you are being treated for any eye condition.
  • If you wear contact lenses.

If you have any doubt about your eye health, talk to your doctor before getting extensions. First time? Read what to expect at your first eyelash extension appointment.

Is there an alternative?

If extensions aren’t right for you, Lash Lifting curls and nourishes your natural lashes without any added fibers. It generally lasts around 6 to 8 weeks.

Keep in mind that lash lifting also uses its own products near the eyes. If you have had a reaction before, only consider it if your doctor agrees. Learn more in our guide to lash lifting in Fortaleza.

Everyday care

Even with no symptoms at all, a clean routine keeps the eye area comfortable and your set looking good in Fortaleza’s heat and humidity:

  • Wash your lashes daily with an extension-safe foam and a soft brush.
  • Use an oil-free makeup remover.
  • Avoid water, steam and heavy sweating for the first 24 hours.
  • After the beach or pool, rinse with fresh water and pat dry.

The full routine is in our guide on how long eyelash extensions last.
