Edson Queiroz is one of the busiest neighborhoods in Fortaleza’s south zone. It is home to one of Ceará’s best-known universities, the Ceará Events Center and a key stretch of Av. Washington Soares, with the Cocó River close by. It is a neighborhood of students, local workers and visitors in town for conferences, fairs and graduations.

Where the name comes from
The neighborhood is named after industrialist Edson Queiroz (1925–1982). In 1971 he set up the Fundação Edson Queiroz, which created the University of Fortaleza (Unifor), opened in 1973.

Unifor, at Av. Washington Soares, 1321, is the heart of the neighborhood. For many south zone residents, daily life runs through the campus: classes, internships, events and, eventually, graduation.
Passeio Edson Queiroz
In front of Unifor’s rectorate, on the central stretch of Washington Soares, is Passeio Edson Queiroz, a public leisure space opened in 2018. Its roughly 12,000 square meters include:
- seating areas with benches and gardens;
- metal sculptures supporting flowering climbing plants;
- a circular fountain;
- landscaping with plants native to Ceará.
The university maintains it in partnership with the city and the state roads department (DER/CE). It is a nice spot for a break or outdoor photos.
Ceará Events Center
On Av. Washington Soares, in Edson Queiroz, the Centro de Eventos do Ceará is a state government venue. It hosts conferences, trade fairs, concerts and large events that draw visitors from across Brazil and abroad.
The Cocó nearby
The neighborhood’s oldest settlements grew along the Cocó River, and Edson Queiroz borders the Cocó protected area and its mangroves — nature close at hand in a very urban district.
