Cajazeiras is a south zone neighborhood of Fortaleza that grew up between two landmarks anyone who drives around the city knows well: the BR-116 highway and the Cocó River. It has a lagoon, neighborhood churches, a busy avenue and plenty of long-time residents.

Here is where the name comes from, what to see, how to look after lash extensions in the local routine, and where to find Niely Oliveira — Studio de Cílios in nearby Cambeba.

Where the name comes from

According to the official neighborhood profile on Fortaleza em Bairros, run by the city’s planning institute (Iplanfor), records show the area has been called Cajazeiras since at least the 1940s, thanks to the many cajazeira trees growing there. The cajazeira is the tree that gives cajá, a tangy yellow fruit loved across Ceará and often found in juices and ice pops.

Today the neighborhood has about 14,500 residents, according to Iplanfor.

Between the BR-116 and the Cocó River

Cajazeiras has the BR-116 on one side and the Cocó River on the other, and it grew along both edges with houses and gated communities. Av. Deputado Paulino Rocha is one of its best-known roads, and the Castelão stadium area is part of the local landscape.

Neighbors include Cidade dos Funcionários and Parque Iracema, which we cover in our Parque Iracema neighborhood guide.

What to see

Lagoa da Maria Vieira Urban Park

The neighborhood’s best-known landmark is the Parque Urbano da Lagoa da Maria Vieira, one of Fortaleza’s urban lagoon parks. The area around the lagoon is known for its natural beauty and is a good spot for a breath of green in the middle of the week.

São Diogo Church

Iplanfor lists the Igreja de São Diogo among the neighborhood’s most significant references, and it is part of Cajazeiras’ community life.

Federal Highway Police headquarters

The neighborhood is also home to the headquarters of the Polícia Rodoviária Federal (Federal Highway Police), another reference cited by Iplanfor, which makes sense for an area right by the BR-116.

Daily life and lash care

Life here means BR-116 traffic, work, school, the gym and the occasional beach day. In Fortaleza’s heat and humidity, these habits make a difference:

  • First 24 hours: no water, steam, sauna or heavy sweating. Save the lagoon walk for the next day.
  • Daily cleansing: a lash foam and a soft brush.
  • Makeup: oil-free remover; skip waterproof mascara and lash curlers.
  • After the sea or pool: rinse with fresh water and pat dry.
  • Refills: extensions usually look good for about 3 to 4 weeks, with a refill recommended every 15 to 21 days.

For the right technique, see how to clean eyelash extensions.

If you notice persistent itching, redness, burning or eye pain, stop using products around the eyes and see an ophthalmologist or dermatologist.
