Well-applied eyelash extensions don’t ruin your natural lashes. Damage usually comes from something else: extensions that are too heavy for your lashes, several natural lashes glued together, DIY removal and the habit of rubbing or tugging at your eyes. In other words, technique and aftercare make the difference.
Here are the myths we hear most often at our studio in Cambeba, in the south zone of Fortaleza, and what actually happens to your lashes.
Myth 1: “Extensions always weaken your lashes”
It depends on how they are applied. Every natural lash has its own thickness and strength. When your lash artist picks an extension that matches that limit, the natural lash carries the weight comfortably.
Problems start when volume comes at any cost, with extensions that are too thick or too long. Over time, excess weight can make natural lashes more fragile. That is why an assessment before the application matters.
- Brazilian Volume uses Y-shaped fibers for a light, natural fullness.
- Russian Volume uses handmade fans of ultra-fine fibers that spread the weight across each natural lash.

Myth 2: “It doesn’t matter if lashes stick together”
It matters a lot. With proper technique, each extension goes on a single natural lash — this is called isolation. Each of your lashes is at a different stage of growth, so isolation lets them shed independently.
When two or more lashes are stuck together, a younger lash gets pulled out when an older one sheds. That feels uncomfortable and can mean losing lashes too early.
Myth 3: “If my lashes are falling out, the extensions are to blame”
Not always. Lashes grow, rest and shed in a natural cycle, and a new lash takes each one’s place. Losing a few lashes every day is normal, with or without extensions.
Because the extension is attached to a natural lash, it falls when that lash does — and a longer extension is simply easier to notice. This cycle is also why a set looks its best for about three to four weeks, with a refill recommended every 15 to 21 days.
Myth 4: “You can take them off at home”
Please don’t. Pulling, picking or trying to dissolve the adhesive with oils or home remedies can take your natural lashes with it and irritate the eye area.
Removal should be done by a professional, with a proper remover and the right technique, so your natural lashes stay intact.
If your set feels uncomfortable, contact your lash artist and book a removal.
Myth 5: “You must take a break between sets”
Not necessarily. When each application respects the limit of your natural lashes, isolation is clean and you keep up with aftercare, breaks are a personal choice rather than a rule.
A pause can make sense if you felt any discomfort, noticed your lashes looking weaker or just want a change. Lash Lifting is a nice option then: it curls and nourishes your own lashes with no extensions. See our guide to lash lifting in Fortaleza.
Myth 6: “Extensions are high-maintenance”
The routine is simple — it just needs consistency:
- For the first 24 hours, avoid water, steam, saunas and heavy sweating.
- Wash your lashes daily with an extension-safe foam and a soft brush.
- Use an oil-free makeup remover.
- Skip lash curlers and waterproof mascara.
- Brush your lashes with a spoolie.
- Don’t rub your eyes or sleep face-down on your pillow.
With Fortaleza’s heat, humidity and beach days, rinsing your lashes with fresh water after the sea and patting them dry goes a long way. More in our guide on how long eyelash extensions last.
