Few neighborhoods in Fortaleza wear their literary roots so openly. José de Alencar, in the city’s south zone, is named after the author of Iracema, O Guarani and Senhora, Brazil’s great Romantic novelist, and the house where he was born still stands within its limits.
If you live here, have just moved to the area or are visiting, here is what the neighborhood is, what to see, how lash care fits the local routine, and where to find Niely Oliveira — Studio de Cílios in nearby Cambeba.
The former Alagadiço Novo
According to the official neighborhood profile on Fortaleza em Bairros, a platform run by the city’s planning institute (Iplanfor), José de Alencar used to be called Alagadiço Novo. The name came from the country estate of the same name, then part of the municipality of Messejana, where José Martiniano de Alencar was born. He was a journalist, politician, lawyer, critic and novelist known across Brazil.
Iplanfor puts its population at about 16,000. It is mostly residential: streets of houses, gated communities and the busy Av. Washington Soares close by.
What to see
Casa de José de Alencar
The neighborhood’s main landmark is the Casa de José de Alencar, a cultural venue run by the Federal University of Ceará (UFC) at Av. Washington Soares, 6055. The writer’s birthplace is now part of the university’s heritage and is open to the public.
There is an auditorium, the Valdelice Girão exhibition room and a green area visitors can explore following the house’s guidelines. The program includes cultural and community activities such as a fair, a reading club and heritage education projects. Check the official website before you go, since exhibitions and the green area can close on specific dates.

Daily life and lash care
Life here follows the rhythm of a residential south zone neighborhood: commuting along Washington Soares, school runs, work, the gym and the beach whenever possible. Fortaleza is hot and humid all year, so your lashes need a simple routine to keep up:
- First 24 hours: keep water, steam, saunas and heavy sweating away from the lashes. Move that intense workout to the next day.
- Daily cleansing: wash with a lash foam and a soft brush. Sweat and oil build up fast in the heat.
- Makeup: use an oil-free remover; skip waterproof mascara and lash curlers.
- Beach and pool: rinse with fresh water afterwards and pat dry.
- Refills: extensions usually look good for about 3 to 4 weeks, with a refill recommended every 15 to 21 days.

If you notice persistent itching, redness, burning or eye pain, stop using products around the eyes and see an ophthalmologist or dermatologist.
