Sabiaguaba is the wildest stretch of Fortaleza’s coastline. Dunes, mangroves, beach, river and lagoons share a neighborhood that is small in population and huge in landscape, at the far east of the city. This guide explains what Sabiaguaba is, what is protected there and how to keep lash extensions looking good with sun, wind, sand and salt water.
What Sabiaguaba is
According to Fortaleza em Bairros, the city government’s neighborhood platform, Sabiaguaba covers about 10.11 km², with just over 2,000 residents — one of the least dense neighborhoods in Fortaleza, which explains how much nature remains.
The name comes from Tupi and means “food of the sabiá” (a thrush). The same source says the area used to be quite isolated, and access improved after the Sabiaguaba bridge and road were built. Today there is a dining hub in the neighborhood, and connections to other beaches and towns in the metropolitan region are easy.
Where the Cocó River meets the sea
According to Diário do Nordeste, the Cocó River rises in the Serra da Aratanha, in Pacatuba, and flows into the sea at Sabiaguaba Beach, creating one of the most beautiful landscapes in the city. The same river that crosses Cocó Park ends its journey here, between mangroves and dunes.
Dunes, mangroves and two protected areas
The city highlights mangroves, beach, rivers and lagoons between the dunes, plus two conservation units:
| Protected area | What it is |
|---|---|
| Sabiaguaba Dunes Municipal Natural Park | Strict protection, about 467 hectares |
| Sabiaguaba Environmental Protection Area (APA) | Sustainable use, about 1,009 hectares |
Both were created by municipal decrees in February 2006, according to the management plan published by the city. The dune field works as a rainwater reservoir, helps regulate temperature and recharges the aquifer, while the mangrove is a nursery for many fish and crustaceans that feed and support local families. When you visit, follow the rules of the protected areas and keep vehicles off the dunes.
Tips for a visit
- Go early or late in the afternoon — the sand gets hot and the glare is strong.
- Sunglasses and a hat protect against sun and wind-blown sand.
- Carry water and sunscreen.
- Pack an extra bottle of fresh water to rinse your face after the sea.
Lash extensions with sun, wind and sea
In Sabiaguaba the wind carries fine sand and the sea leaves salt. Both build up at the base of the lashes and, if not cleaned, leave extensions heavy and dull. A simple routine lets you enjoy the beach and still wake up ready:
- For the first 24 hours, avoid water, steam, saunas and heavy sweating — save the beach for later.
- After the sea or a lagoon, rinse your lashes with fresh water and pat dry.
- Wash them every day with lash foam and a soft brush to remove salt, sand and sunscreen.
- Use oil-free sunscreen and remover around the eyes.
- Don’t rub your eyes if sand gets in; rinse with clean water.

If you spend a lot of time in the water and prefer something simpler, a lash lift curls and nourishes your own lashes with no extensions and usually lasts about 6 to 8 weeks. See eyelash extensions or lash lift.
Beauty in the area
Because Sabiaguaba is small and residential, many people look for beauty services in neighboring parts of south Fortaleza, where there is a wide range of lash studios, brow artists, waxing and nail salons. When choosing a lash artist, look for hygiene, mapping suited to your eye shape, proper isolation and clear aftercare guidance.
If you notice persistent itching, redness, burning or eye pain, stop using products around the eyes and see an ophthalmologist.
