Spend a little time in Fortaleza’s south zone and you will hear people mention Água Fria (“cold water”). The name shows up in conversation and in street addresses, yet few newcomers know where it comes from. What Água Fria is

Água Fria is not one of Fortaleza’s 121 official neighborhoods. It is the old name of the area that became the Edson Queiroz neighborhood. According to the official neighborhood profile published by the City of Fortaleza, until the mid-20th century Água Fria was made up of small farms, country houses, salt flats and mangroves along the Cocó River. Settlement picked up from the 1970s, when families from across the city moved in and communities such as Dendê took shape.

The official name changed, but locals still use “Água Fria” for this part of Edson Queiroz, and it still appears in addresses.

The Cocó River and the mangroves

The area’s history is tied to the Cocó River, one of Fortaleza’s main waterways. Much of the green land along it belongs to the Parque Estadual do Cocó, a state park formally established in 2017 with about 1,571 hectares. Even in a busy urban district, the mangroves are never far away.

University of Fortaleza (Unifor)

The neighborhood is named after businessman Edson Queiroz, who founded the University of Fortaleza (Unifor), which the city describes as one of the most important drivers of local development. For many residents, campus life — classes, internships, events, graduations — is part of the daily landscape.

Event center and courthouse

The official profile also highlights two large public venues: the Centro de Eventos do Ceará, the state convention center that hosts congresses, trade fairs and concerts, and the Fórum Clóvis Beviláqua, a large courthouse complex. The area mixes long-standing communities, residential streets, students and commuters.

Getting to the studio from Água Fria

The usual route leaves the area’s inner streets via Rua Doutor Carlos Ribeiro Pamplona and follows Av. Washington Soares, the south zone’s main artery, toward Cambeba. From there, Rua Crisanto Moreira da Rocha and Av. Viena Weyne take you to Av. Pedro Lazar. It is about 5.3 km by car from the center of the neighborhood.
