Sapiranga is a neighborhood of contrasts: gated communities next to streets of older houses, busy avenues and, at the same time, patches of mangrove still holding their ground against the city. Knowing a little about the area makes daily life there easier to enjoy.

Here is what Sapiranga is, what is worth knowing, how to look after lash extensions in the local routine, and where to find Niely Oliveira — Studio de Cílios in nearby Cambeba.

A name with history

According to the official neighborhood profile on Fortaleza em Bairros, run by the city’s planning institute (Iplanfor), the word “sapiranga” means “red eyes”, and the neighborhood covers the area formerly known as Coité. That is why maps and addresses often show the official name Sapiranga/Coité.

Sapiranga has just over 32,000 residents, according to Iplanfor.

From Coité to gated communities

In the 1990s the area went through a real estate boom, with many medium and high-end horizontal gated communities being built. The official profile notes how they contrast with the rest of the housing in the area, highlighting the neighborhood’s social inequality.

That mix still shapes Sapiranga today: long-time families, newcomers, local shops and the daily flow of people working and studying in the south zone.

Nature in the middle of the city

Sapiranga Private Ecological Reserve

Urban growth wiped out much of the area’s river and coastal plains, including mangroves. That loss sparked strong environmental awareness and led to the creation of the Reserva Ecológica Particular da Sapiranga, on land put forward by a private foundation. Iplanfor describes the reserve as significant for the city’s biodiversity, and academic studies describe it as an urban conservation unit focused on protecting the mangrove ecosystem.

Lagoa da Sapiranga and the Coaçu River

The area also has the Lagoa da Sapiranga, by the Coaçu River, in a permanent preservation zone. Diário do Nordeste has reported on debates over building and mangrove protection around the lagoon, a reminder of how valuable and fragile these green spaces are. For more on the river, see our Coaçu neighborhood guide.

Daily life and lash care

Life here moves fast: rush-hour traffic, school, work, the condo gym and the beach on weekends. In Fortaleza’s year-round heat and humidity, a few habits keep extensions looking good:

  • First 24 hours: no water, steam, sauna or heavy sweating. The condo pool and hard workouts can wait.
  • Daily cleansing: lash foam and a soft brush, especially on the hottest days.
  • Makeup: oil-free remover; no waterproof mascara or lash curler.
  • After the sea or pool: rinse with fresh water and pat dry.
  • Refills: every 15 to 21 days, since extensions usually look good for about 3 to 4 weeks.

For sunny beach days, see our tips on eyelash extensions in the beach and heat of Fortaleza.

Persistent itching, redness, burning or eye pain? Stop using products around the eyes and see an ophthalmologist or dermatologist.

Prefer something without extensions?

If you spend a lot of time in the pool or simply prefer your own lashes, a lash lift curls and nourishes your natural lashes with no extensions. It usually lasts about 6 to 8 weeks.
