Sooner or later you may want your eyelash extensions off — to take a break, to switch styles, because your set has grown out, or because you are heading home after a season in Fortaleza. Whatever the reason, the answer is the same: have them removed by a professional, with a proper remover and the right technique. Taking them off yourself is the fastest way to lose natural lashes along with the extensions.
Why extensions don’t just “come off” the right way
Each extension is bonded to a single natural lash, close to the base but never touching the skin. The adhesive is designed to hold up to water, sweat, heat and everyday life — which is exactly why it doesn’t let go easily.
Normally, an extension falls out together with its natural lash at the end of that lash’s growth cycle. That’s what refills are for. Removing a full set at once means dissolving that bond without stressing the natural lash, and that takes a dedicated remover applied carefully, right next to your eyes.
What not to do at home
- Don’t pull or pick at them. The extension is attached to your natural lash. Pull one and the natural lash usually comes out too, leaving gaps that can take weeks to fill in.
- Don’t use oil to “melt” the glue. Coconut oil, olive oil, oily makeup removers and online hacks aren’t made for this. They may not break the bond evenly, can irritate the area and can run into your eyes.
- Don’t use steam, hot water or a hair dryer to soften the adhesive. Heat near the eyes is an unnecessary risk.
- Don’t rub your eyes to speed things up. Friction damages lashes and irritates the eyelid.
- Don’t reach for tweezers or scissors. One wrong move near the eye can hurt you.
If you notice itching, burning, redness, swelling or pain, don’t try to remove the extensions yourself. Stop using products around the eyes and see an ophthalmologist or dermatologist, who can advise you — including on whether removal is needed.
Curious where the idea that extensions “ruin” lashes comes from? Our post on eyelash extension myths and facts covers it — and DIY removal is one of the main culprits.
What professional removal usually looks like
Details vary between lash artists, but the process generally goes like this:
- A quick chat about why you want them off and whether anything has been bothering you.
- Lower lashes protected so the product never touches them or your skin.
- Remover applied precisely along the base of the extensions while your eyes are closed.
- A short wait while the remover softens the adhesive — no force needed.
- Gentle removal, sliding the extensions off with a proper tool.
- A final cleanse to remove any leftover adhesive or product.
You lie down with your eyes closed the whole time. If anything stings, say so right away.
Do you actually need a full removal?
| Situation | What usually makes sense |
|---|---|
| You want a break from extensions | Full professional removal |
| Your set has grown out and looks uneven | A refill or removal, depending on the assessment |
| You want a different technique or style | Talk it through with your lash artist |
| You’ve had irritation or discomfort | Doctor first, then professional removal |
Often a grown-out set doesn’t need to come off at all — a refill at the right time solves it. See the lash refill service for details.
If the reason is sensitivity
See a doctor first. Redness, persistent itching and swelling can have many causes, and only an ophthalmologist or dermatologist can assess them. Our guide to eyelash glue allergy signs explains what to watch for. Let your lash artist know too, so the next steps are planned safely.
After removal
- Keep cleansing around your eyes gently, without rubbing.
- Use an oil-free makeup remover, especially if you plan to go back to extensions.
- Go easy on the lash curler and on tugging when you take makeup off.
