A set of eyelash extensions looks its best for about three to four weeks, with a refill every 15 to 21 days. Extensions follow the natural cycle of your lashes: each natural lash sheds and is replaced within a few weeks — and the extension attached to it goes too. How long a set lasts depends on technique as much as on your routine.
The routine part is up to you. Here is the aftercare that matters most, from day one to your next refill, with Fortaleza’s heat and humidity in mind.
How long do they last?
On average, a set looks its best for three to four weeks. After that, natural shedding starts to leave gaps and it is time for a refill.
- A refill every 15 to 21 days keeps the volume even.
- After four weeks, a full new set is usually needed.
Oily skin, frequent beach or gym sessions and rubbing your eyes all tend to shorten that window. For more on timing, see how often to get a lash refill.
The first 24 hours
The adhesive finishes curing during the first hours. During that time:
- Keep your lashes dry.
- Skip saunas, steam and sweaty workouts.
- Avoid sleeping face-down on your pillow.
Very hot, steamy showers can also wait until the next day.
Everyday care
Clean lashes last longer. Oil and makeup residue weaken the bond.
- Wash your lashes daily with an extension-safe foam cleanser and a soft brush.
- Use oil-free makeup removers.
- Brush your lashes every morning with a spoolie.
- No lash curlers or waterproof mascara.
- Don’t rub your eyes — especially after the beach or the pool.
After washing, pat your lashes dry gently or let them air-dry, then brush them once dry. The full routine is in how to clean eyelash extensions.
How should I sleep with lash extensions?
Your pillow is one of the biggest threats to a fresh set. Sleeping face-down or pressed on one side pushes on the lashes all night, which can bend, twist and loosen extensions early.
- Sleep on your back if you can, at least for the first few nights.
- If you’re a side sleeper, try switching sides so one eye doesn’t take all the pressure.
- A smoother pillowcase usually creates less friction than a rough one.
- Brush your lashes with a spoolie when you wake up.
If one eye loses more lashes than the other, it is often the side you sleep on.
Can I wear makeup with extensions?
Yes, with a few adjustments. Extensions already do most of mascara’s job, so many people simply stop using it. If you do wear eye makeup:
- Choose powder or water-based shadows and liners that remove easily.
- Keep oily products away from the lash line.
- Skip waterproof mascara — it needs strong removers and rubbing.
- Remove makeup every night with an oil-free remover, without scrubbing.
A lash fell out — what now?
Losing a few lashes every day is normal. Most of the time the extension comes off with a natural lash that reached the end of its cycle — you’ll usually see a tiny natural hair at the base.
- Don’t pull loose or crooked lashes, even if they bother you.
- Don’t glue anything back on yourself.
- If one is poking or badly out of place, brush it with a spoolie; if it still bothers you, message your lash artist.
Removing extensions at home can pull out natural lashes. Removal should always happen at the studio.
Signs it’s time for a refill
- Visible gaps, or one eye looking fuller than the other.
- Grown-out lashes sitting further from the lid and starting to twist or cross.
- The mapping looks uneven and loses its shape (natural, doll, cat eye or fox eyes).
- It’s been 15 to 21 days since your last appointment.
Heat and beach days in Fortaleza
Sun, salt and chlorine won’t ruin your set, but they speed up wear. After the beach, rinse your face with fresh water and pat your lashes dry without rubbing.
When to reach out
If you notice persistent itching, redness, burning or swelling, don’t wait it out: see an eye doctor (ophthalmologist) and let your lash artist know. Removing extensions at home can pull out natural lashes — always leave removal to your lash artist.
