The lake sits between the Cambeba and Cidade dos Funcionários neighborhoods and is described as the main public leisure space in the area. A little background
The Parque Urbano do Lago Jacarey (Lago Jacarey Urban Park) was officially created in 2014. Fortaleza’s city government later redeveloped the lakeside, and the works opened in November 2020. They included:
- a larger public square;
- a wider lakeside walkway with new paving and sidewalks;
- a renovated outdoor gym;
- a bike path and bike lane;
- raised pedestrian crossings.
Since then, the lake has become a meeting point for families, evening walkers and local cyclists.
What to do at Lago Jacarey
Walk or jog the lakeside path
The walkway around the lake is the simplest and most popular option: a relaxed loop, a chat with a friend, a dog walk or a light workout. Fortaleza’s sun is strong all year, so the cooler parts of the day are usually the most pleasant.
Ride a bike
The bike path and bike lane added in the redevelopment make the area friendlier for cycling, whether for fun or for short trips around the neighborhood.
Use the outdoor gym
The square’s outdoor gym is a free way to add a few exercises to your walk.
Watch the birds
The lake has ducks and geese, and the trees around it attract other birds. Kids love it — and so do plenty of adults.
Browse the stalls
Around the lake you will find snack and food stalls, plus stands selling clothes, accessories and handicrafts. It tends to be busiest on weekends, when families fill the lakeside.
Cambeba beyond the lake
Cambeba grew up in the 1980s alongside the Centro Administrativo Governador Virgílio Távora, the state government complex. Many locals still say “Cambeba” when they mean the complex itself, home to bodies such as the Ceará Court of Justice and the Tribunal de Contas dos Municípios.
