Yes, you can wear makeup with eyelash extensions. The main rule is simple: keep oil away from your lashes. Oils and very creamy products soften the adhesive, and extensions start falling out early. Eyeliner, shadow and concealer are all still fine — as long as you pick the right formulas and remove them gently every night.

Mascara is the one thing that really changes: most of the time, you won’t need it anymore.

Why oil is the main enemy

Lash adhesive is designed to handle water, sweat and everyday heat. Its weak spot is oil. Oily products that regularly reach the base of the lashes loosen the bond between extension and natural lash.

So check the label of everything that goes near your eyes — not just makeup, but also creams, sunscreen and removers. In Fortaleza’s year-round heat and humidity, skin already tends to get oilier, and oily products on top of that speed up wear.

Before your appointment

Arrive with clean eyes — no mascara, liner or shadow. Makeup residue gets in the way of bonding. The studio sends prep instructions on WhatsApp after you book. After the application, wait 24 hours before wearing eye makeup or washing your lashes.

Mascara: do you still need it?

Usually not — extensions already give you the length, curl and color. If you still want some, for example on your lower lashes or for a special night:

  • Never use waterproof mascara. It takes strong removers and rubbing to come off.
  • Choose water-based formulas that wash off easily.
  • Apply to the tips only, away from the root where the adhesive sits.
  • Skip the lash curler. It can bend and break both extensions and natural lashes.

If you feel you need mascara to get the look you like, it may be worth asking for a fuller mapping at your next refill.

Eyeliner: which type?

Liner pairs beautifully with extensions, especially cat eye and fox eyes styles. The formula is what matters:

Type With extensions
Water-based liquid Good choice; removes easily
Pencil Use with care; some are creamy or oily
Gel or cream Best kept away from the lash line
Waterproof Avoid; needs strong remover

Draw the line close to the root without dragging the brush through the lashes, and don’t pull hard on the lid.

Shadow, concealer and foundation

  • Powder shadows are the easiest. Tap off excess so it doesn’t fall between the lashes.
  • Cream shadows and primers are fine on the lid, away from the lash line.
  • Concealer under the eyes should be pressed, not rubbed, around the lower lashes.
  • Glitter works best on the lid and face, with no oily glitter glue near the roots. For party season, see lashes for parties and events in Fortaleza.

Strip false lashes glued over extensions aren’t recommended: the glue and the removal can pull out extensions and natural lashes.

How to remove makeup without ruining your set

This is where many sets get lost. Every night:

  1. Use an oil-free remover. Be wary of bi-phase removers, which usually contain an oily layer.
  2. Apply it on a pad or cotton swab and wipe gently downward — no scrubbing, no circles on the lashes.
  3. Wash your lashes with an extension-safe foam and a soft brush.
  4. Rinse, pat dry and brush with a spoolie once dry.

The full routine is in how to clean eyelash extensions. And never sleep in your makeup — residue at the root weakens the bond.

Skincare and sunscreen

  • Keep eye creams and serums on the orbital bone, not at the lash line.
  • Apply sunscreen carefully around the eyes without spreading it onto the lashes.
  • Lighter textures are kinder to extensions, especially on oily skin.

If any product causes burning, itching or redness, stop using it and see an ophthalmologist or dermatologist.

Clean roots, longer wear

The cleaner the roots, the longer your set looks good — usually three to four weeks, with a refill every 15 to 21 days. See how long eyelash extensions last and plan your lash refill.
