The style of your eyelash extensions comes from mapping: the plan of lengths, curls and placement across your eye. The four most requested effects are natural, doll, cat eye and fox eyes, and each one flatters a different eye shape in its own way.
The short version: almond eyes suit almost anything; round eyes look longer with cat eye or fox eyes; downturned eyes need care at the outer corner; close-set and wide-set eyes are balanced by where the longest lashes go. The final call happens in the consultation, looking at your actual face.
What is lash mapping?
Mapping is the blueprint drawn before application. It decides where the shortest and longest lashes sit and which curl goes where.
That’s why two people with the same technique can leave with very different looks. Technique sets the density; mapping sets the shape. Still picking a technique? See Brazilian vs Russian volume.
The four main lash styles
- Natural. Follows your own lash line with soft length changes. Defined, but not “done.” Great for a first set.
- Doll. The longest lashes sit at the center of the eye for a wide, rounded, sweet look.
- Cat eye. Lengths build gradually toward the outer corner, like a soft eyeliner flick that elongates the eye.
- Fox eyes. Also focused on the outer corner, but swept up and out for a lifted, elongated, striking look.
Which style suits your eye shape?
| Eye shape | Styles that usually flatter | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Almond | Almost all of them | Your style decides |
| Round | Cat eye, fox eyes | Doll can make eyes look rounder |
| Hooded | Doll, natural with a stronger curl | Lashes must show with eyes open |
| Downturned | Doll, natural with a soft outer corner | Very long outer lashes can drag the eye down |
| Close-set | Cat eye, fox eyes | Keep inner corners short |
| Wide-set | Natural, doll | Go easy on outer-corner length |
Almond
The most versatile shape. Already balanced and elongated, almond eyes carry everything from natural to fox eyes. It really comes down to taste.
Round
Cat eye and fox eyes stretch the eye toward the temples. Doll concentrates length in the middle and makes round eyes rounder, which may be exactly what you want, or not.
Hooded
When the lid covers part of the lash line, a stronger curl helps lashes show when your eyes are open. A doll effect usually opens the eye nicely.
Downturned
The outer corner already points down, and long lashes there can exaggerate it. Doll, or natural with a softer outer corner, tends to lift the look.
Close-set
Shorter lashes at the inner corner and longer toward the outer corner create a sense of space between the eyes. Cat eye and fox eyes work well.
Wide-set
The goal is to draw focus toward the center. Natural and doll balance the eye without overdoing outer-corner length.
Eye shape is a starting point, not a rule. Your style, your routine and the health of your natural lashes matter too.
How is the style decided?
Mapping is always decided in the consultation, before application, based on:
- the shape and position of your eyes
- the thickness, length and density of your natural lashes
- the look you have in mind and your daily routine
- the occasion, whether that’s everyday life, a wedding, a graduation, Réveillon or Carnaval in Fortaleza
A reference photo helps, but the result has to work with your eyes and lashes. Sometimes a small tweak to the style you picked looks more balanced and feels more comfortable.
Good aftercare keeps the shape looking sharp for longer; here is how long eyelash extensions last.
